Harrie's Pancakes

I've always heard about Harrie's Pancakes but I've never been or tried any. They've now moved from the Waterfront to Hout Bay and I happened to be in the area to check it out.

The setup is awesome for summer, with outside tables and large patio umbrellas (and a little play section for kids). I'm not sure what the layout's like in winter. Because I had a fairly big lunch, I decided to share a pancake (they're a decent size). We ordered a really weird-sounding pannekoek - something like pancake with milktart custard. I don't even remember. I know it had something to do with milktart custard.

Now, as far as I know (and according to Wikipedia), a pancake is thin, flat and round. I'm not sure what they gave me but it definitely wasn't thin. But, pancake thickness argument aside, what they served was delicious. Is it a milktart, is it a pancake, what is it? That's kinda the feeling you get when you eat this one. It's really good, especially with the dollop of ice-cream they give.

 It's in the Main Road in Hout Bay and there's off-street parking available.

Let's go bowling!

Bowling's fun. I've done it a few times before and I'm pretty bad at it...until a few days ago. I won my first bowling match at Let's go Bowling in Claremont.

I don't think any of us know the trick to bowling, we all just kind of let the ball slip off our fingers and off it goes. Sometimes you're lucky, sometimes not. I don't know how the scoring works but at the end of the game the highest score wins. Pretty straight forward.

One game can last about one hour and a maximum of eight people can play and it's R40 a person. Wear comfortable shoes that won't make you slip.

Cupcakes Galore

Just had to share this. It's the coolest thing from Woolies. Eight cupcake capsules with jelly beans inside. Nom nom! I don't like jelly beans, but I had to buy this just for the fun packaging!

Bubble balls at the Getaway Show

I went to the Getaway Show over the weekend and tried out the Bubble Balls. Basically you climb into a plastic deflated transparent ball  and let them blow it up. Once the ball's totally inflated, you'll look like you're in a bubble...and off you go onto the water. It's lots of fun but can get really hot (if it's a sunny day). It's really hard to keep your balance and a lot of the time you'll look and feel like a hamster on its wheel. You'll fall from side to side, upside down and spin all around (sounds like a rhyme) and after 5 minutes you could feel a little nauseous. If you do it with friends you can play bumper bubbles - that will keep you laughing all the way the way through.

KDay 2011

That festival was hot ...and I'm talking about the 44 degrees Celcius kinda hot! Every year Kfm has a music festival featuring local artists performing at some venue where you can picnic and make a day of it. This year it was at Val de Vie Wine and Polo Estate in Paarl and we decided to give it a go. We knew it was going to be hot...but not the kind of why-didn't-I-go-to-the-beach-I-want-to-kill-myself HOT. We got to the venue at about 8:30am and there was a queue (damn those eager beavers!). We could feel the heat then already!

We brought umbrellas, and some were provided - but the rule was: while there's someone performing on stage your umbrella needs to be down. So it was like a circus show with people lowering and opening their shade every ten minutes or so. Eventually the medics advised the organisers that there was no way we could sit in that heat all day long. WHEW. But with the the pleasure of having the shade came the displeasure of not seeing the stage. But there comes a time in your life when you have to decide...do I want a perfect view of the stage or do I want to melt and die? Was a tough choice..but at the end of the day just listening to the bands was good enough.

Heat aside, it was a spectacular show and it made me really proud of our country with all its talent. Artists included Chad Saaiman, Danny K (who rocked the party). La Vuvuzela, Good Luck, Ard Matthews (of Just Jinger fame), Flash Republic, Goldfish (who rocked the party some more), Arno Carstens (whose CD I bought the day after), Freshly Ground (whose performance made us reminisce about the soccer world cup last year), Dr Victor and the Rasta Rebels (whose act we missed because it was getting late) and the headline act, Prime Circle. If I left anyone out, I'm sorry :-)

And then the umbrellas came out

If the line up's just as good next year, I'll definitely go again...but I'll be sure to bring a blow-up pool to chill in throughout the show.

The Community Chest Carnival

I've been to the Community Chest Carnival at Maynardville before but didn't really think much of it. I don't drink (and that's part of the fun of going there, I guess) so apart from the beer gardens, there was never much else for me to do there...till NOW.

I was at the carnival last Thursday evening and it was actually really fun. I wish I hadn't eaten before I got there though. There was some yummy food on offer and I was too full to have any... but eventually I caved - hehehe. It's the first time I went to a fair and felt like I was in a movie - you know they always have fun-looking carnivals with rides and prizes and candy floss (or cotton candy) where you see a couple in love walking around and he wins her a prize (usually a huge teddy bear) and then they go on the big wheel ..etc

 

My experience wasn't exactly like that, but it was pretty close. I won a....toothbrush..YAY! Hahaha. The rides were really fun - even though after I finished my second one I was done for the day. They're much scarier than I remember. That, or I was just more brave back then.

I'm testing this SanDisk Sansa Clip+ MP3 player - it's kinda awesome and much cheaper than an iPod. Doesn't have all the fancy schmancy colour display tricks and extras though.
